Poltava 1709

Description

On July 8, 1709, a battle took place near Poltava between the Swedes, commanded by King Charles XII, and the Russians, commanded by Tsar Peter the Great. The Swedes attacked the Russian positions in four columns and were initially successful. However, after a few hours their momentum stopped and the right wing column was destroyed. Soon the Russians took the initiative and began the attack. The clash ended with the defeat of the Swedes, most of whom died or were captured.
